It was revealed to me this past Father's Day that we fathers don't have real Father's Day song to honor us, so "Instead" is for the fathers, father figures, step fathers, father-in-laws, and even the baby daddies out there who try to get it right, and to the women who take those men for granted. By no means am I using this song, or the concept of this song, to tear anyone down. It's only meant to honor the rock of the family. No, I didn't wanna wait until next Father's Day to release this, which is something I would expect a record label to try to "encourage" me to do. There's a father, or father figure somewhere in this world doing his part everyday, so why wait until a holiday to honor them with this tune? I'm cool on the ceremonial piety. Give the men their flowers while they yet live.
